We did it! The final pieces of our first client project were finally put into place this Spring. We’ve been sitting on these photos for a while, but allow us to finally give you a room-by-room tour and break it all down, starting with the primary suite.
The original primary suite was a large, open space with the bed facing a bathtub and bay windows across the room. To the left of the tub was a closet and spiral staircase leading to a much larger basement closet added by a previous owner, and to the right was the primary bath. The clients did not like the tub out in the open and the primary closet was lacking in storage, so to alleviate these issues, we decided to enclose the living area containing the tub to create a larger main-level closet, moved the tub to where the original closet was, and added a vanity and water closet on the left side to create a second “hers” bathroom. We also covered the spiral staircase in curved drywall so that it would blend more seamlessly into the space.
Above, the newly enclosed space that once housed the tub is now the new closet. Though the arch is Her bath, formerly home to the original closet. At the top of the client’s wishlist for the new closet was a handbag showcase, which now takes front and center. The arched entryway was newly created to match an existing arch on the opposite side leading into the original primary bath, now “his” bath.
Cutouts with glass were added to the island to showcase watches and jewelry. The cabinets were painted Calm by Benjamin Moore, and the polished nickel hardware from Top Knobs was selected to match the polished nickel plumbing fixtures. A mirrored column of shelves projects from neighboring cabinets to give a glamorous center stage to an assortment of bags and accessories collected on travels.
In Her bath, you can see glimpses of the newly covered spiral staircase in the dressing table mirror, and the old tub is in its new home under a newly installed Pella window. The clients wanted lighting that felt glamorous and feminine, yet still modern, so we decided on this Pendant and Sconce by Visual Comfort. They also wanted a clean, no-fuss look for the vanities, so we fabricated simple countertops with floating shelves in Calacatta Belgia marble.
In His bath, we kept the original water and shower closet and added some storage, curtains and a new vanity to match Hers to refresh the space without overthinking it. The original tile floors were replaced with more Brazilian Cherry to harmonize the space with the closet and Her bath. The Sconces, also by Visual Comfort, provide a masculine complement to the lighting on Her side.
Above, the original primary bath, now His bath. You may notice the house originally had a Bohemian flavor—with weathered woods and Asian architectural accents and lighting—which was not to the client’s tastes.
And finally, the bedroom. The original chevron Brazilian Cherry floors had developed gaps so we replaced them with straight Brazilian Cherry flooring to flow seamlessly with the rest of the house. We stained them in Duraseal Ebony to cancel out the strong red undertones and create a more restful canvas for the rest of the home. The clients and I shared a vision for a moody bedroom, so we took it to the extreme with Iron Ore by Sherwin Williams. Our timeline was strict, especially for the primary suite, so furnishings had to be exclusively stocked. A canopy Bed by Crate and Barrel gives verticality to the space and cuts through the darkness of the walls, and a sturdy marble Console from HD Buttercup provides visual balance. The Sideboard by RH and Art from Lulu and Georgia blend
into the background, giving center stage to the dramatic bed and console.
A detail of the bed: Lamps by Visual Comfort, Nightstands from Lulu and Georgia, linens from Zara Home, throw by Rosemary Hallgarten, and custom pillow in a tie-dye Greenhouse Fabric.
More details: Nightstands from Lulu and Georgia blend with the dark walls, providing contrast with the bed. A whimsical Chandelier by Visual Comfort gives the otherwise subdued closet a sense a play.
